Getting started with the Pro Tools Preferences Window: Mixing Tab

Working on a new DAW requires the user to “set the mirrors before driving”. This means, you must set the preferences of the software in order to adapt it to your personal needs.

The Preferences Window in Pro Tools lets the user set the behavior of all aspects such as the display, operation, editing, mixing, metering, etc.

On today’s tutorial we will study the Mixing Tab of the Preferences Window.

1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

2. Open the preferences window by clicking on Pro Tools -> Preferences:

3. The Preferences Window will open as:

4. Click on the “Mixing” tab:

The Mixing Tab contains 4 configuration areas. These are:

  • Setup:

This area contains all the mixing setup preferences such as the selected default EQ and dynamics, sends default to -infinity, send pans default to follow main pain, etc.

  • Controllers:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Mixing Tab

This area contains all the preferences regarding controllers such as edit window follows the current bank selection, mix window follows current bank selection, scrol to track bank controllers, touch timeout length, etc.

  • Automation:

This area contains all the automation preferences. Some of these include the latching behavior for switch controls in touch mode, include sends in trim mode, modes to switch after write pass, auto-match and auto-glide times, etc.

  • Delay Compensation:

This area lets the user select the time mode applied to the delay compensation function.

Once the settings have been applied, the user can simply press OK to apply the settings.
