Getting started with the Pro Tools Preferences Window: Editing Tab
Working on a new DAW requires the user to “set the mirrors before driving”. This means, you must set the preferences of the software in order to adapt it to your personal needs.
The Preferences Window in Pro Tools lets the user set the behavior of all aspects such as the display, operation, editing, mixing, metering, etc.
On today’s tutorial we will study the Editing Tab of the Preferences Window.
1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:
2. Open the preferences window by clicking on Pro Tools -> Preferences:
3. The Preferences Window will open as:
4. Click on the “Editing” tab:
The Editing Tab contains 6 configuration areas. These are:
- Clips:
This area contains all the clips-related preferences such as auto-naming separated clips, clip list selection follows edit selection, edit selection follows clip list selection, gain nudge values and others.
- Fades:
This area contains all the preferences associated to fades. The user can set the previews of the pre and post rolls fades dialogs, set a default quick-punch cross-fade length and a default fade in/out and cross-fade settings.
- Tracks:
This area contains the preferences associated to tracks. The user can default the new tracks to timebase, suppress name dialog when creating new playlists and show target playlist after sending clip selection.
- Memory Locations:
This area contains the preferences associate to memory locations. Here, the user can auto name memory locations when playing and recall memory location selection at original track.
- Zoom Toggle:
All the zoom preferences are found on this area. The user can configure vertical and horizontal zoom, track height, track view, remove range selection after zooming in and others.
- Levels of Undo:
On this area the user can set the levels of undo. The maximum is 64.
Once the settings have been applied, the user can simply press OK to apply the settings.
At this point we have successfully explained the Editing Tab of the Pro Tools Preferences Window.
