Getting started with the Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

Working on a new DAW requires the user to “set the mirrors before driving”. This means, you must set the preferences of the software in order to adapt it to your personal needs.

The Preferences Window in Pro Tools lets the user set the behavior of all aspects such as the display, operation, editing, mixing, metering, etc.

On today’s tutorial we will study the Operation Tab of the Preferences Window.

1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

2. Open the preferences window by clicking on Pro Tools -> Preferences:

3. The Preferences Window will open as:

4. Click on the “Operation” tab:

The Operation Tab contains 7 configuration areas. These are:

  • Transport:

This area presents the user with all the possible transport operation configurations. You can set custom shuttle lock speeds, back/forward amounts, assign numeric keypad to transport or shuttle, and latch transport controls.

  • Record:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

This area contains all the record preferences options such as latching the record enable buttons, linking record and play faders, destructive punch file length, and other miscellaneous recording features.

  • Auto Backup:

This is perhaps one of the most important parts of the Operation tab. It lets the user enable the session aut0-backup, its time, and the number of backups allowed.

  • Misc:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

This area shows the user some miscellaneous options such as the mouse wheel scrolling, clip audi fade lengths and others.

  • User Media and Settings Location:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

This area is crucial because it lets the user select the location within the drive where libraries, project media cache, documentation and settings will be stored.

  • Video:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

On this area, the GPU can be enabled for video purposes, tearing can be prevented, and the Play Start latency can be selected.

  • Diagnostics:

Pro Tools Preferences Window: Operation Tab

This area lets users configure the Save Logs diagnostics, reset logging, etc.

Once the settings have been applied, the user can simply press OK to apply the settings.

At this point we have successfully explained the Operation Tab of the Pro Tools Preferences Window.
